System Diagnosis
The TCM continuously monitors transaxle operation and contains a self-diagnostic system which stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) if an electronic control system malfunction is detected. If a malfunction is detected and a DTC is set, the TCM will deliver a signal to flash OD/OFF indicator on instrument cluster to indicate that a 2-digit "Flash Code" has been stored. In addition, TCM transmits DTC data to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which will be retained in memory as a 4-digit OBD-II DTC. As a result, PCM will illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).
When retrieving "Flash Codes", the number of OD/OFF indicator flashes will equal first digit of DTC. After a one second pause, second digit of DTC is displayed. If more than one DTC is present, the next DTC will be displayed after a 3 second pause. Smallest number DTC will be displayed first. DTCs are repeated after each retrieval cycle. Once a DTC is retrieved, determine probable cause. See DTC IDENTIFICATION .
DTCs may be retrieved using 3 methods. If OD/OFF indicator or MIL indicates a system malfunction, retrieve DTCs using desired method. See RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES .
