DTC 34: Transmission Range (Tr) Switch: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Suzuki Esteem. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: DTC 34 will set if 2 or more TR switch signals are inputted at the same time.
  1. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between TCM harness connector terminal A11 (White/Black wire) and terminal A12 (Black/Red wire). If reading is about 12 volts with gear selector lever in "P" position, and about zero volts with gear selector lever in any other position, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step  7.
  2. Measure voltage (backprobe) between TCM harness connector terminal A24 (Red/White wire) and terminal A12 (Black/Red wire). If reading is about 12 volts with gear selector lever in "R" position, and about zero volts with gear selector lever in any other position, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step  7.
  3. Measure voltage (backprobe) between TCM harness connector terminal B2 (White/Red wire) and terminal A12 (Black/Red wire). If reading is about 12 volts with gear selector lever in "N" position, and about zero volts with gear selector lever in any other position, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step  7.
  4. Measure voltage (backprobe) between TCM harness connector terminal B9 (Violet/Red wire) and terminal A12 (Black/Red wire). If reading is about 12 volts with gear selector lever in "D" position, and about zero volts with gear selector lever in any other position, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step  7.
  5. Measure voltage (backprobe) between TCM harness connector terminal B10 (Violet wire) and terminal A12 (Black/Red wire). If reading is about 12 volts with gear selector lever in "2" position, and about zero volts with gear selector lever in any other position, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step  7.
  6. Measure voltage (backprobe) between TCM harness connector terminal B1 (Red/Black wire) and terminal A12 (Black/Red wire). If reading is about 12 volts with gear selector lever in "L" position, and about zero volts with gear selector lever in any other position, check for an intermittent problem or faulty PCM. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  7. Test TR switch operation. See TRANSMISSION RANGE (TR) SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTING. Adjust or replace if necessary. If TR switch tests okay, check wires in TR switch harness for shorting together. Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, substitute TCM with a known-good unit. Retest system.
