The purpose of Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system is to augment driver and front passenger seat belts to reduce risk of severe injury during certain frontal impacts. Main components of SIR system are Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), front end discriminating sensor, driver and passenger-side inflator modules, SIR coil assembly, and AIR BAG warning lamp. SDM controls function of other SIR system components, supplies a 23 volt, back-up power supply, and provides monitoring and diagnostic capabilities to SIR system. See Fig 1.
