Difficult Or No Start (Cranks Okay)

  1. Check ignition spark. See step 1) of SPARK TEST under IGNITION CHECKS in BASIC TESTING article. If results are okay, the ignition system is in good condition. If the results are not good, go to the next step.
  2. Check spark plugs and plug caps. Pull out spark plug wires by gripping their caps and then remove the spark plugs. Inspect them for electrode wear, carbon deposits and insulator damage. If any abnormality is found, adjust air gap to 0.028-0.031 in. (0.7-0.8 mm), clean with spark plug cleaner or replace them with specified new plugs (NGK: BKR6E, NIPPONDENSO: K20PR-U). Install spark plugs and torque them to 20.5 ft. lb. (28 N.m). Install spark plug wires securely by gripping their caps. If spark plugs are okay, go to the next step.
  3. Check spark plug wires. See step 2) of SPARK TEST under IGNITION CHECKS in BASIC TESTING article. If results are okay, go to the next step. If results are not good, replace faulty spark plug wires.
  4. Check distributor cap and rotor for crack and their terminals for corrosion and wear. If components are okay, go to the next step. If components are not good, replace as necessary.
  5. Check noise suppressor. See NOISE SUPPRESSOR under IGNITION CHECKS in BASIC TESTING article. If results are okay, go to the next step. If results are not good, replace faulty noise suppressor.
  6. Check distributor power supply. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If results are okay, go to next step. If results are not good, repair open or short in distributor wire harness.
  7. Check the distributor. See IGNITOR (POWER UNIT) and IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE under IGNITION CHECKS in BASIC TESTING article. If results are okay, go to the next step. If results are not good, replace distributor.
  8. Substitute a known-good ECM and retest system.

  • Faulty Camshaft Position (CKP) or Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
  • Malfunctioning ECM.
  • Malfunctioning PCV valve.
  • Malfunctioning electronic fuel injection system.
  • Slipped or broken timing belt.
