Service Precautions
These precautions should be observed when working with air bag systems:
- Disable SRS before servicing any SRS or steering column component. Failure to do this could result in accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
- Wait about 20 minutes after disabling SRS before servicing vehicle. System maintains SRS voltage for about 2 minutes. Servicing SRS before 20 minutes have passed may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
- Always disconnect and shield both battery cables before working near any SRS components. Disconnect negative battery cable first.
- Always remove key from ignition switch before beginning any work on SRS.
- Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling an air bag.
- DO NOT repair, splice or modify any SRS wiring harness. If harness is damaged, it must be replaced.
- DO NOT use a circuit tester to check SRS components or wiring harness connector. Only use manufacturer recommended procedures and equipment when testing SRS.
- DO NOT install any used SRS components to replace used or damaged parts. Use only new SRS components when repairing system.
- Air bag modules contain sodium azide which is a poisonous and flammable gas. Contact with water, acid or heavy metals may produce harmful or explosive compounds. DO NOT dismantle or incinerate air bag modules. Always dispose of air bag modules properly.
- When placing a live air bag module on a bench or other surface, always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface. This will reduce motion of module if accidentally deployed.
- Wash hand thoroughly after handling deployed air bags.
- DO NOT subject air bag modules to temperatures more than 185°F (85°C) or electrical equipment.
- DO NOT allow grease, oil, cleaning solutions, or similar products to come in contact with air bag module.
- When carrying a live air bag module, trim cover should be pointed away from your body to minimize injury in case of accidental deployment.
