Bearing Preload

  1. Place pinion shaft in differential housing. Install flange, washer and retaining nut. Install Preload Adjuster (09922-75221) on pinion flange. See Fig 1 .

  2. Using a spring scale, check starting preload, not rotating preload. Tighten pinion nut until specified starting preload is obtained. See PINION BEARING PRELOAD SPECIFICATIONS  table.
    PINION BEARING PRELOAD SPECIFICATIONS

    Application INCH Lbs. (N.m)
    Starting Preload 48-90 (5.4-10.2)
    Rotating Preload (1)
    (1) Preload is 8-15 INCH lbs. (.9-1.7 N.m) when not using preload adjuster.
  3. Install pinion flange on pinion shaft. Hand tighten pinion nut. Install Preload Adjuster (09922-75221) on pinion flange. Rotate pinion flange several times to seat bearings. Attach spring scale to preload adjuster. Check starting preload.
  4. Tighten pinion nut until specified starting preload is obtained. See PINION BEARING PRELOAD SPECIFICATIONS  table. If starting preload is exceeded, replace collapsible spacer and recheck. DO NOT loosen pinion nut to obtain correct starting preload. Stake pinion nut.
