Carrier Assembly: Reassembly

  1. Press side bearings onto differential case halves. To reassemble differential case, reverse disassembly procedure. Ensure reference marks on halves align. Position ring gear on differential case halves. Apply Loctite to ring gear retaining bolt threads.
  2. Place carrier assembly in differential housing. Position side bearing caps and adjusters in housing. Ensure marks made on side bearing caps during disassembly are aligned.
  3. Tighten side bearing cap bolts to 89-168 INCH lbs. (10-19 N.m). Rotate adjusters until they contact side bearing races. Position a dial indicator against ring gear. See Fig 1 . Check ring gear backlash. Backlash should be .004-.006" (.10-.15 mm).

  4. If ring gear backlash is not as specified, rotate adjusters equally, running one forward and the other backward, until correct backlash is obtained. Rotating one notch equals .002" (.05 mm) change in backlash. Attach spring scale to adapter.
  5. Check total starting preload. See Fig 2 . If total preload is not correct, readjust ring gear preload. Tighten side bearing cap bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install locks. Using red lead paste, check contact pattern. See GEAR TOOTH CONTACT PATTERNS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
