Scrapped Vehicle

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1996 Suzuki Esteem. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Some vehicles to be scrapped may have an undeployed air bag module. Follow these procedures when scrapping a vehicle with an undeployed module:

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Yellow 2-pin connector at base of steering column. Cut harness side of SRS wiring about 6 inches from Yellow 2-pin connector.
  2. Splice 2 wires at least 15 feet long to wiring cut from SRS harness. Twist deployment wires together at other end. Deployment wires should remain shorted and not connected to a power source until air bag is to be deployed. Connect Yellow 2-pin connector. Ensure inflator module is secured to steering wheel. Remove all loose objects from front seat and ensure no one is in vehicle. Stretch wires as far away from car as possible.
  3. Disconnect passenger inflator module Yellow 2-pin connector located behind glove box. Cut passenger inflator module harness connector from vehicle, leaving at least 6 inches of wire at connector.
  4. Splice 2 wires at least 15 feet long to wiring cut from SRS harness. Twist deployment wires together at other end. Deployment wires should remain shorted and not connected to a power source until air bag is to be deployed. Connect Yellow 2-pin connector. Ensure inflator module is secured to instrument panel. Remove all loose objects from front seat and ensure no one is in vehicle. Stretch wires as far away from car as possible.
  5. Completely cover windshield area and front door window openings with a drop cloth. Separate 2 ends of driver deployment harness. Connect wires to a 12-volt battery. Air bag should deploy. Repeat procedure for other air bag. DO NOT  touch inflator module area for 10 minutes due to heat generated during deployment. Wear gloves and safety glasses before handling a deployed air bag. Wash hands with soap and water afterward.
