Steering Gear: Disassembly

  1. Place steering gear in a soft-jawed vise. Place reference marks on tie rod ends and inner tie rods for reassembly reference. Loosen lock nuts and remove tie rod ends.
  2. Remove spring clip, boot clamp and boot. Bend up lock washer tab. Unscrew inner tie rod from rack. Remove cap, rack adjusting screw, spring and rack plunger. See Fig 1.

  3. Remove dust cover. Using Socket (09944-28210), remove pinion bearing plug and case seal. To remove pinion, use soft-faced hammer and tap on housing while holding pinion. Remove rack from housing.
