This bulletin is to inform you of the change in the A/C System that will be taking place in the 1994 Swifts. The new system will use a new type of refrigerant called R134a, which differs from the other type of A/C System which uses R-12. This bulletin describes and identifies the new components and the precautions that must be taken when servicing this system.

CAUTION: Both A/C systems (R134a and R-12) use different types of compressor oil and refrigerant. Using the inappropriate part for the installed A/C system will cause damage to the A/C system, resulting in refrigerant leakage into the atmosphere.

All component parts are shown in Fig 1 . Since the parts are not interchangeable between the two A/C systems, be sure to use the correct replacement parts by referring to the parts catalogs for the vehicle being serviced.

IDENTIFICATION BETWEEN R-12 TYPE AND R I34a TYPE A/C

The type of A/C system installed on the vehicle can be identified by referring to the I.D. plates located on the vehicle frame and on the back of the compressor. Shown in Fig 2 , are their locations and appearance.

SERVICING

IMPORTANT: When performing any service work on an A/C system, be very careful not to let the refrigerant (R-12 or R134a) leak out into the atmosphere. The refrigerant, if leaked out or discharged, is harmful to the environment. Therefore, be sure to withdraw the refrigerant by using a Refrigerant Recovery Unit before performing any service work during which the refrigerant can leak out or be discharged.

The method and precautions to be used when recharging R-l34a A/C systems and the precautions involved for handling the refrigerant container are basically the same as those for the R-12 A/C systems, except for a few differences, which are described below:

The operation pressure of a specified amount of added refrigerant will vary, depending on the refrigerant.
Compressor oil: R-12 type - ND-0IL 6, R-I34a type - ND-OIL 8.

NOTE: To prevent incorrect installation, the "A" connectors shown in Fig 3 . are standard thread and the "B" connectors are metric thread.

When evacuating the R-l34a type A/C system, be sure to attach a vacuum pump adapter to the vacuum pump.
