April 5, 2026: LEMON Manuals is launched! Read the announcement.

Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)

NOTE: TCC will operate only under the following conditions;
  • Throttle valve opening is more than 7 degrees and less than 62 degrees.
  • Engine coolant temperature is more than 140°F (60°C).
  • Brake pedal released.
  • Transmission fluid pressure is below 59.7 PSI (420 kPa).
  1. Ensure ignition is in LOCK position. Disconnect Electronic Control Module (ECM). See Fig 1 . Disconnect ECM 17-pin harness connector. Using DVOM, measure voltage between harness connector terminal B11 and ground. Turn ignition on. If battery voltage is present, go to step  4 .
  2. If battery voltage is not present, measure voltage between TCC relay harness connector terminal No. 3 (White/Red wire) and ground. TCC relay is located in fusible link box, on right side of engine compartment. DO NOT  disconnect connector. If battery voltage is present, inspect and repair circuit between relay and ECM.
  3. If battery voltage is not present, check for battery voltage at TCC relay harness connector terminal No. 1 (Blue/Black wire). DO NOT  disconnect connector. If battery voltage is present, inspect and repair relay connection as needed. If connection is okay, replace relay. If battery voltage is not present, inspect and repair circuit between main relay and TCC relay. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  4. Disconnect harness connector at transmission. Using test light, probe harness connector terminal No. 2 (White wire). Backprobing TCC relay connector, connect jumper wire between connector No. 3 (White/Red wire) and ground.
  5. If test light illuminates, inspect pressure switch. Replace as needed. If switch is okay, replace ECM and retest.
  6. If test light does not illuminate, backprobe TCC relay terminal No. 4 (White wire) with test light. DO NOT  disconnect jumper wire. If test light illuminates, inspect and repair circuit between transmission and relay. See wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS section.
  7. If test light does not illuminate, remove jumper wire. Using test light, backprobe TCC relay terminal No. 2 (White/Red wire). If test light illuminates, replace relay and retest. If test light does not illuminate, inspect circuit from IG-COIL fuse to relay, including brake light switch. Repair as needed.
