Incorrect Shift Speeds

  1. Ensure engine and transmission is normal operating temperature. Retrieve trouble codes. See RETRIEVING CODES . Repair as needed. Clear codes. See CLEARING CODES .
  2. Access TCM harness connector. See Figure and Figure . DO NOT  disconnect connector. Using DVOM, backprobe TCM harness connector. Measure voltage between TH terminal and ground. See Figure.
  3. Slowly depress accelerator pedal to wide open throttle (WOT). Monitor voltage while depressing throttle pedal. Voltage should decrease as throttle is depressed. Voltage should be within the range, battery voltage multiplied by .95 (idle position) to battery voltage multiplied by .39 (WOT).
  4. If voltage is not within range in previous step or voltage erratically changes, refer to the appropriate article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. If voltage is okay, turn ignition off.
  5. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Disconnect speedometer cable from transmission. Using ohmmeter, connect leads between SPM terminal and ground. See Figure. Monitor ohmmeter while turning speedometer cable.
  6. Ohmmeter needle should pulse between zero and infinity ohms 4 times per revolution. If ohmmeter does not display 4 pulses per revolution, inspect for broken speedometer cable, faulty sensor in speedometer or faulty circuit between speedometer and TCM.
  7. If ohmmeter pulses 4 times per revolution, ensure ignition is off. Connect TCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. Connect DVOM leads between PWR terminal and ground. Move shift selector to "N" position. Voltage should be 5 volts. Move selector to "P" position. Voltage should be zero volts.
  8. If voltage is within specification, replace TCM and retest. If voltage is not within specification, replace PNP switch and retest. If problem still exists, inspect and repair circuits between PNP switch and TCM.
