Pinion Shaft Starting Torque

  1. Ensure oil is at proper level. Oil level should be approximately 1.4" (35 mm) from bottom of oil fill plug. Adjustment of pinion shaft starting torque is made with adjusting bolt.
  2. Remove steering gear from vehicle. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Align pitman arm so it is parallel with pinion shaft. See Fig 1.
  3. Attach spring scale to bolt on outermost edge of flexible joint with a string. See Fig 2. Pull spring scale and note starting torque measurement. Starting torque should be 11 lbs. (5 kg).
  4. If starting torque is not within specification, loosen or tighten adjusting bolt and recheck.
