SERVICE INFORMATION

Suzuki security system is standard on the 1994-95 Sidekick and 1996 Sport and X-90 models. It is an optional accessory for all other Suzuki models except 1995-96 Swift and Esteem.

CONDITION

Customer has performed the diagnostics as outlined in his/her owner's manual and the security system is still inoperative.

CAUSE

See DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE FOR SUZUKI SECURITY SYSTEM TABLE in this bulletin.

REVISION

This bulletin is to assist you with diagnosing problems on the Suzuki Security System available as standard equipment on the 1994-95 Sidekick, 1996 Sidekick Sport, and X-90, and optional equipment on other models.

Beginning in the 1996 model year, the Sidekick Sport and X-90 will be the only models equipped with a port-installed security system. The security for the 1996 Sidekick 2-door and 4-door vehicles will be available as an accessory item only. Various changes in the 1996 Sidekick wiring harness will require te new-style alarm for proper installation.

PARTS INFORMATION

1994-95 MODEL YEAR ALARM SYSTEM (99980-46060)

  • 1994 Swift
  • 1994 Sidekick 2-door & 4-door
  • 1995 Port-installed Sidekick 2-door & 4-door
  • 1994-95 Samurai

1996 MODEL YEAR ALARM SYSTEM (99980-46061)

  • 1996 Sport
  • 1996 X-90 (4WD, pre-installed)
  • 1996 Sidekick 2-door & 4-door

A security system is not available for the 1995-96 Swift or the 1995-96 Esteem models. The new security system (p/n 99980-46061) will include the following changes from the earlier system:

  • The controller in the gray trigger wire is removed from the harness; and
  • the yellow connector in the gray trigger wire is removed from the harness; and
  • the blue connector for the power door lock circuit (if equipped) is a two-pin male connector with a new plug-in location in the vehicle wiring harness. See Fig 1 .

All other features are identical to the previous security system.

NOTE: If the security system is completely inoperative, check the inline fuses for the main alarm unit first. Also, each time the main alarm unit or remote transmitters are replaced, the alarm will have to be re-programmed.

SUZUKI ALARM SYSTEM DEALER TEST PROCEDURE

BEFORE TEST

  1. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.
  2. Turn the valet switch to the "OFF" position (white dot on switch is out).
  3. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

ARM/DISARM TEST

  1. Press the button on the remote transmitter to arm the system. The following should occur:
    • siren chirps once; - If not, refer to DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE FOR SUZUKI SECURITY SYSTEM TABLE symptom #1 or #3.
    • parking lights will flash once; - if not, refer to DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE FOR SUZUKI SECURITY SYSTEM TABLE symptom #1.
    • doors will lock (equipped with power door locks); - If not, refer to DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE FOR SUZUKI SECURITY SYSTEM TABLE symptom #8.
    • LED starts flashing slowly; - If not, refer to DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE FOR SUZUKI SECURITY SYSTEM TABLE symptom #6.
  2. Press the button on the remote transmitter to disarm the alarm. The following should occur:
    • siren will chirp twice;
    • parking lights will flash twice;
    • doors will unlock (if equipped with power door locks);
    • LED starts to flash rapidly, indicating that alarm will re-arm itself in 30 seconds.

PASSIVE ARMING AND SHOCK SENSOR TEST

NOTE: Passive arming is for 1994-1995 vehicles only. If you desire passive arming for a 1996 alarm system, connect the blue loop wires together, located on the side of the alarm controller.
  1. Open the driver's side door.
  2. Close the door.
  3. Wait for 30 seconds. Alarm will arm and the following should occur:
    • siren chirps once;
    • parking lights flash once;
    • LED starts flashing slowly.

    If the above do not happen:

    1. Check for a break in the light blue loop wire located on the side of the alarm controller
    2. Check the pin switch wire and connectors
    3. Check the door pin switches
    After an additional 10 seconds

    • doors lock (if equipped with power door locks).
  4. Check the shock sensor by kicking a tire. The following should occur:
    • siren will go off; - if not, refer to DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE FOR SUZUKI SECURITY SYSTEM TABLE symptom #3.
    • parking lights will flash continuously; - if the sensor is too sensitive or insensitive, refer to DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE FOR SUZUKI SECURITY SYSTEM TABLE symptom #4 and #5.
  5. Press the button on the remote transmitter to disarm the system. The following should occur:
    • siren will shut off;
    • parking lights will flash four times;
    • siren will chirp four times;
    • LED starts to flash rapidly, indicating that alarm will re-arm itself in 30 seconds.

DOOR TRIGGER TEST

  1. Press the button on the remote transmitter to arm the system.
  2. Wait for 5 seconds.
  3. Open the rear door showly to avoid engagement of the shock sensor. The following should occur:
    • siren will go off;
    • parking lights will flash continuously.

    If the above do not happen:

    1. Check for a break in the light blue loop wire located on the side of the alarm controller;
    2. Check the pin switch wire and connectors;
    3. Check the door pin switches.
  4. Press the button on the remote transmitter to disarm the system. The following should occur:
    • siren will stop;
    • siren will chirp four times;
    • parking lights will flash four times;
    • LED starts to flash rapidly, indicating that alarm will re-arm itself in 30 seconds.

PANIC AND AUTO RE-ARMING TEST

NOTE: Passive arming is for 1994-95 vehicles only. If you desire passive arming in a 1996 alarm system, connect the blue loop wires together, located on the side of the alarm controller.
  1. Press the button on the remote transmitter and hold for three seconds to activate the panic mode. The following should occur;
    • siren will go off;
    • parking lights will flash continuously;
    • doors will lock (if equipped with power door locks);
    • LED starts flashing slowly.
  2. Press the button on the remote transmitter to disarm the system (Do NOT open the door). The following should occur:
    • siren chirps four times;
    • parking lights flash four times;
    • LED starts to flash rapidly, indicating that alarm will re-arm itself in 30 seconds.
  3. Wait 60 seconds; alarm will re-arm. The following should occur:
    • siren chirps once;
    • parking lights flash once;
    • doors will lock (if equipped with power door locks);
  4. Press the button on the remote transmitter to disarm the system.
  5. Wait five seconds and open any door. The following should occur:
    • LED stops flashing and stays on;
    • After closing the door, the LED starts to flash rapidly, indicating that alarm will re-arm itself in 30 seconds.

IGNITION ALARM OFF TEST

  1. Turn ignition key to run position.
    • LED should turn off.

VALET MODE FOR SHIPMENT

  1. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.
  2. Turn the valet switch to the "ON" position (white dot on switch is in).
  3. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.
  4. LED should be off.
I. DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE FOR SUZUKI SECURITY SYSTEM

Symptoms Diagnosis Solutions
1.  The remote controltransmitter does not work; customer cannot arm or disarm the alarm. 1A: Is the valet/override (V/O) switch in the "OFF" position? (white dot out)? YES: Go to 1B. NO: 1.  Flip V/O switch to "OFF" (white out). 2.  Turn ignition key to "ON" and then to "OFF".
--- 1B: Change the remote transmitter battery. Does the remote work now? NO: Go to 1C.
--- 1C: Replace and re-program the remote control transmitter. If the new remote control transmitter doesn't arm or disarm the alarm, 1. Check Black 4-PIN connector in alarm harness. May be plugged in upside down. 2. Replace the main control unit.
2.  Remote control transmitter range is short and/or works intermittently 2A: Replace the remote control transmitter battery. Does the transmitter work properly now? NO: Replace and re-program the remote control transmitter.
3.  Siren is inoperative 3A: Confirm that the siren is inoperative by arming the alarm and providing a shock to the to the vehicle body. The siren should then sound. NO: 1.  Check the wire connections from the siren to the main control unit. 2.  Replace the siren. 3.  Replace the main control unit.
4.  Many false siren alarms. 4A: Adjust the sensitivity on the impact sensor. Does the sensor operate properly? NO: Replace the impact sensor.
5.  Alarm doesn't respond to vehicle body shocks. 5A: Adjust the sensitivity on the impact sensor. Does the sensor respond to body shocks by triggering the alarm? NO: Replace the impact sensor.
6.  Red LED on the switch panel doesn't light or flash. 6A: Are the other alarm functions working properly? YES: Replace the switch panel. NO: Go to 6B.
--- 6B: Is the valet/override switch in the "OFF" position? YES: Replace the main control unit. NO: Go to 6C.
--- 6C: 1. Flip the valet/ override switch to "OFF". 2. Turn ignition key to "ON" and then to "OFF". If the problem still exists, then replace the switch panel and the control unit.
7.  Valet/Override switch doesn't work. 7A: Was the ignition key in the "ON" position before flipping the valet override switch to "ON"? YES: Go to 7B. NO: 1.  Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position. 2.  Flip the valet/ override switch to the "ON" position.
--- 7B: Replace the valet/ override switch panel. If the problem still exists, then replace the main control unit.
8.  With power door locks only: Doors don't lock or unlock when arming ordisarming the alarm. 8A: Check the connections for the door lock wire harness. Does the problem still exist? YES: Replace the door lock wire harness. If the problem still exists, replace the main control unit.
9.  Alarm goes off while driving. 9A: Black 4-pin connector in alarm harness may be plugged in upside down. YES: Unplug 4-pin connector and re-install with fastening clips pointing towards each other.
10.  If any of the above still exists... 10A: Check all the fuses(s) in the electrical circuit of the vehicle. YES: Replace faulty fuse(s). NO: Check for poor connections.

II. SUZUKI SECURITY SYSTEM COMPONENT PARTS REPLACEMENT GUIDE

MAIN CONTROL UNIT

(1994-95 p/n 99980-46060-001; 1996 p/n 99980-46061-001)

  1. Main control unit is located on the passenger side behind the glove box. Remove the glovebox.
  2. For 1995 vehicles, cut the two tie-wrap cables holding the main control unit in place. For 1996 vehicles, cut the single tie-wrap cable holding the main control unit in place. Be sure not to damage the foam pad on the bottom of the controller.
  3. Remove the 12-pin wire harness from the main control unit. Be careful not to cut any wires. (With power door locks: Remove the blue 2 pin connector from the main control unit).
  4. Replace the main control unit with the new control unit, installing two new tie-wrap cables to hold it in place.
  5. Reconnect the wiring harness to the main control unit.
  6. Re-install the glove box.
  7. Re-program the remote transmitters.

REMOTE CONTROL TRANSMITTER

(1994-95 vehicles: p/n 99980-46060-002; 1996 vehicles: p/n 99980-46061-002)

  1. After replacing the remote control transmitter, you must program the new transmitters with the main control unit.
  2. Programming procedure:
    1. Flip the valet/override switch to the "ON" position.
    2. With the key in the ignition, turn the ignition "ON", then "OFF".
    3. Flip the valet override switch "OFF', then ON/OFF twice. You will hear a confirming siren chirp.
    4. Turn the ignition switch ON/OFF twice. You will hear a confirming siren chirp.
    5. You are now in the programming mode. Secure both new transmitters. Push the green button on transmitter #1. Within five seconds, push the green button on transmitter #2. You will hear confirming siren chirps after programming each transmitter.
    6. After five seconds, the programming mode will close automatically.

WIRE HARNESS

(1994-95 vehicles: p/n 99980-46060-003; 1996 vehicles: p/n 99980-46061-003)

  1. Remove RH speaker cover and glove box pivot pin.
  2. Remove the glove box from the passenger side.
  3. Remove the 12-pin wire harness from the main unit. Be careful not to cut any wires.
  4. Remove all bullet and plug connectors from the harness and remove the harness.
    • Gray wire: Unplug the gray wire from the domelight connector located in the door frame post between the front and rear doors on the passenger side of the vehicle.
  5. Install new harness into vehicle. Plug harness into the main unit and connect all bullet and plug connectors.
  6. Reinstall the Speaker cover.
  7. Reinstall the glove box.

DOOR LOCK WIRING HARNESS

(1994-95 vehicles: p/n 99980-46060-004; 1996 vehicles: p/n 99980-46061-004)

  1. Remove the driver's side speaker cover and speaker from the kick panel.
  2. Reach inside and disconnect the blue plug connector.
  3. Remove RH speaker cover and Glove Box Pivot Pin.
  4. Remove the glove box from the passenger side.
  5. Unplug the blue 2-pin wire connector from the main control unit. Remove the door lock wiring harness by pulling it through to the driver's side of the vehicle.
  6. Plug in the blue 2-pin connector from the new harness to the main control unit. Run the wire under the dash to the door lock (blue plug connector). Make sure the connection is secure.
  7. 7 Reinstall the speaker covers and glove box.

SWITCH PANEL WITH L.E.D. AND VALET OVERRIDE SWITCH

(1994-95 vehicles: p/n 99980-46060-005; 1996 vehicles: p/n 99980-46061-005)

  1. Locate and remove the dash panel under the steering column.
  2. Locate the small white 4-pin plug connector on the main alarm wiring harness and disconnect it.
  3. Remove the switch panel from the dash.
  4. Insert the new switch panel into the dash and connect the 4-pin connector.
  5. Reinstall the dash panel under the steering column.

SIREN

(1994-95 vehicles: p/n 99980-46060-006; 1996 vehicles: p/n 99980-46061-006)

  1. Remove the RH speaker cover and Glove Box Pivot Pin.
  2. Remove the glove box from the passenger's side dash.
  3. Locate the red siren lead wire on the main wiring harness and disconnect it from its bullet plug.
  4. Locate the siren under the hood on the firewall. Pull the red siren wire through the grommet in the firewall into the engine compartment
  5. Disconnect the mounting bolt that holds the siren into place. Remove the siren.
  6. Install the new siren back into position with the supplied bolt. When bolting the siren back into place, be sure to connect the ring connector ground wires from the siren.
  7. Push the red wire with the male bullet connector through the grommet in the firewall. From inside the vehicle, pull the excess wire into the passenger's compartment.
  8. Plug the red wire male connector into the red wire female connector on the main control unit wiring harness.
  9. Re-install the glove box and speaker cover.

IMPACT SENSOR

(1994-95 vehicles: p/n 99980-46060-007; 1996 vehicles: p/n 99980-46061-007)

  1. Remove the RH speaker cover and Glove Box Pivot Pin.
  2. Remove the glove box from the passenger's side dash.
  3. Locate and disconnect the yellow and the brown/black bullet connectors in the main wiring harness.
  4. Locate the sensor under the hood on the firewall. From the engine compartment, pull the yellow and the brown/black wires through the grommet in the firewall.
  5. Disconnect the sensor's black ground wire from the bolt on the siren.
  6. Remove the sensor from the bracket.
  7. Place the new sensor back in the same position on the bracket.
  8. Connect the black ground wire to the bolt on the siren.
  9. Push the yellow wire and the brown/black wire through the grommet in the firewall. From inside the vehicle, pull the excess wire into the passenger's compartment.
  10. Connect the yellow male connector and the brown/black male connector into the female connectors on the main wiring harness.
  11. Reinstall the glove box and speaker cover.
  12. Remove the rubber covers on the impact sensor. Using a small Phillips head screw driver, test and adjust the sensor's sensitivity to a desired setting. When finished, reinstall the rubber covers onto the sensor.

COMPONENT/CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION AND LOCATION

1994-95 SIDEKICK 2-DOOR AND 4-DOOR

The proceeding wiring diagrams relate to pre-installed Sidekick Suzuki Alarms. If you are installing the alarm into the vehicle, refer to the installation instruction included with the alarm for proper installation and location of related components. See Fig 2 for location of security electrical components.

1994-95 Sidekick 4-door Model With Pre-installed Security System

The gray trigger wire on the Sidekick 4-door model travels from the controller, behind the front kick panel, along the edge of the passenger's side door frame (underneath the carpeting) to the center pillar. Here, it splits into two male and female bullet connectors: The male connector attaches to the Black wire from the right front door pin switch and the female connector attaches to the Black/Red wire from the dome light. See Fig 3 .

1994-95 Sidekick 2-door With Pre-installed Security System

The gray trigger wire on the Sidekick 2-door model travels from the controller, along the bottom of the door opening (underneath the carpet) to a rubber grommet in the door frame. Here, it enters the rubber grommet and into the door frame, travelling to the center pillar where it splits into two male and female bullet connectors: The male connector attaches to the Black wire from the right front door pin switch and the female connector attaches to the Black/Red wire from the dome light. See Fig 4 .
