Shift Linkage: Notes

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 1987 Pontiac Grand Prix, 1987 Pontiac Firebird, 1987 Pontiac 1000, 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass, and 1987 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Linkage should be adjusted so that engine cannot be started in any position except "P" or "N". If linkage is improperly adjusted, an internal leak could occur causing a clutch and/or band failure.
  2. With selector lever in "P" position, parking pawl should engage rear/reaction internal gear lugs or output ring gear lugs. Pointer on indicator quadrant should line up properly with range indicators in all ranges.
