Steering Gear: Inspection
- Check all components for damage or deterioration. Check for play in tie rod end ball joints. Check pinion teeth surfaces for wear or damage.
- Check rack for runout and excessive tooth wear. Runout must not exceed .016" (.41 mm). Inspect needle bearing and rack bushing for wear.
- If needle bearing requires replacement, use Bearing Remover (09921-20200) to remove needle bearing from housing.
- If rack bushing requires replacement, remove rack bushing retaining snap ring. Using Bushing Remover (09944-48210), remove rack bushing from housing.
CAUTION:
DO NOT pull rack bushing from housing while clamping housing in a vise. Use bushing remover to prevent separating tube from rest of housing.
NOTE:
Before reassembly, coat all components with light coat of grease.
