Removal (Samurai & Sidekick)

  1. Ensure front wheels are pointed straight-ahead. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel, horn pad and combination switch. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD and COMBINATION SWITCH.
  2. Disconnect ignition switch connectors. Remove screw and ignition switch. See Fig 1 . To remove steering column lock, complete steps 3) and 4).

  3. Remove lower instrument panel cover. Remove "U" joint clamp bolt. Separate steering shafts at "U" joint. Remove steering column floorboard bracket bolts. Remove steering column upper bracket bolts. On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove backdrive cable from steering column assembly. Pull steering column from floorboard.
  4. Use a hammer and drift punch to loosen shear bolts from column lock assembly. See Fig 2 . Remove shear bolts and column lock.
