Front Axle Shafts: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove locking hub retaining bolts, locking hubs and "O" rings. Remove snap rings and washers from ends of axle shafts.
  2. Disconnect stabilizer bar from control arms. Remove stabilizer bar mount bolts and stabilizer bar. Remove cotter pins and nuts from tie rods at steering knuckles. Separate tie rods from steering knuckles. Remove brake caliper retaining bolts. Remove brake calipers, and wire aside. DO NOT  disconnect lines from brake calipers.
  3. Remove brake rotor. Remove lock plate for wheel bearing. Using Wheel Bearing Socket (09951-16050), remove wheel bearing nut and thrust washer. Remove hub assembly with bearings and oil seal.
  4. Remove dust shield from steering knuckle. Support front suspension with floor jack. Remove steering knuckle-to-strut retaining bolts. Remove nut and separate steering knuckle from ball joint. Remove steering knuckle.
  5. Install shaft removal fork between right axle shaft and differential housing. Tap on shaft removal fork, and remove right axle shaft. Disconnect and separate left axle shaft from inner axle shaft flange at front differential housing.
