Pick-Up Coil: Testing and Inspection
When performing this test procedure, ensure work area is well ventilated, never ground coil wire near any fuel system component, and never touch the coil wire while using metal objects such as a screwdriver.1. Remove distributor cap and rotor.
2. Disconnect coil wire from the distributor cap, then ground coil wire to the engine.
3. Ensure signal rotor teeth are off the generator pickup coil.
4. Connect a suitable voltmeter between ignition coil negative cable and engine ground to check for battery voltage.
5. Repeatedly insert and remove a flathead screwdriver between the generator pickup coil and signal rotor. Voltage reading should fluctuate, between .5--1 volt, with the screwdriver inserted.
6. If voltage does not fluctuate as specified in step 5, replace the generator assembly.
