Pinion Shaft Starting Torque

  1. Ensure oil is at proper level. Oil level should be approximately 1.4" (36 mm) from bottom of oil fill plug. Adjustment of pinion shaft starting torque is made with adjusting bolt No. 1. See Fig 1.
  2. Remove steering gear from vehicle. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  in this article. Align pitman arm so that it is parallel with the pinion shaft. See Fig 1.
  3. Attach an INCH lb. spring scale to the outermost edge of the flexible joint by attaching a string around one of the bolts and looping it around the outermost edge of the flexible joint. See Fig 2.
  4. Pull on the spring scale to move the flexible joint. Note the starting torque measurement. Starting torque should be between 42-70 INCH lbs. (1.58-2.63 N.m). If not, loosen or tighten No. 1 adjusting bolt as necessary.
