Pinion Shaft Operating Torque
- Ensure oil is at proper level. Oil level should be approximately 1.4" (36 mm) from bottom of oil fill plug. Adjustment of pinion shaft operating torque is made with adjusting bolt No. 1. See Figure.
- Remove steering gear from vehicle. Align pitman arm so that it is parallel with the pinion shaft. Attach an INCH lb. spring scale to the outermost edge of the flexible joint by attaching a string, long enough for a complete turning cycle, around one of the bolts.
- Loop the string around the outermost edge of the flexible joint. See Figure. Pull on the spring scale to turn flexible joint through a complete turning cycle.
- Note the operating torque measurement. Operating torque should be under 6.96 INCH lbs. (1.58-2.63 N.m). If not, loosen or tighten No. 1 adjusting bolt as necessary.
- If pinion shaft starting torque and operating torque tests have been performed and adjustment is not possible, replace steering gear as a unit.
