SQUEALING NOISE FROM TRANSMISSION/TRANSFER CASE
Model(s): 1986-91 Suzuki Samurai vehicles
Group: Powertrain
Bulletin No: TS 3-07 12070
Symptom: Squealing Noise from Transmission/Transfer Case
SERVICE INFORMATION
A high pitched squealing noise coming from the transmission or transfer case area may be caused by a dry oil seal. Four possible sources are:
- Transmission extension case oil seal. See Fig 1 .
- Transfer gearbox input shaft oil seal. See Fig 2 .
- Transfer gearbox output front shaft oil. See Fig 2 .
- Transfer gear box rear case oil seal. See Fig 2 .
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Support the vehicle by both axles in a safe manner and so that it can be operated with the drivetrain tuning. Operate the vehicle in the gear and at the speed which duplicates the noisy condition. Spray each of the oil seals with silicone lubricant until the noise disappears. This will indicate the dry seal. Lubricate; or replace and lubricate, as necessary to correct the problem.
