Valve Springs

  1. Remove camshaft and rocker arms. Use Valve Spring Compressor (09916-14510) and Valve Lifter Attachment (09916-48210) to remove retainer locks. Remove retainers, springs, spring seats and valves. Keep components in proper order for reassembly.
  2. Standard valve spring free length is 1.941" (49.30 mm). Replace spring if free length is 1.894" (48.10 mm) or less.
  3. Use a valve spring tester to test spring pressure under load. Standard valve spring pressure is 54.7-64.3 lbs. (24.8-29.2 kg) at a compressed height of 1.63" (41.4 mm). Replace spring if pressure is less than 50.2 lbs. (22.8 kg) at a compressed height of 1.63" (41.5 mm).
  4. Valve spring squareness should be .079" (2.0 mm) or less. If squareness exceeds specification, replace valve spring. Install valve springs with fine pitch end toward valve spring retainer.
