Steering Knuckle & Front Axle Shaft: Removal

  1. Remove hub and bearing. See FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS  under ADJUSTMENTS in this article. Loosen but DO NOT  remove upper and lower kingpin retaining bolts. Remove dust cover, caliper holder and wheel spindle from axle housing.
  2. Separate tie rod from steering knuckle. Remove 8 bolts retaining oil seal cover. Remove felt pad, oil seal and seal retainer from steering knuckle. Remove steering knuckle oil seal. Mark kingpins for location. Remove kingpins from steering knuckle.
  3. Note location of shims. Shims and kingpins must be installed in original location. Slowly remove axle shaft and spindle assembly from both sides of vehicle. Remove steering knuckle and kingpin bearings. DO NOT  allow lower kingpin bearing to drop during steering knuckle removal.
