Piston & Connecting Rod Assembly: Installation

  1. Mount connecting rod on aligner and inspect for bend and twist. Bend limit is .002" (.05 mm). Twist limit is .0039" (.10 mm). If specifications are exceeded, replace connecting rod. Lubricate all internal surfaces with engine oil before installation. Ensure that arrow on piston head faces front of engine. Ensure that lubrication jet in connecting rod faces intake side of engine. Position piston ring gaps. See Fig 1 . Use ring compressor to compress rings, without changing their position.
  2. Install piston and connecting rod assembly into cylinder block in their original position. Tap lightly on piston dome with wooden hammer handle while guiding connecting rod onto crankshaft. Install rod cap on proper piston and connecting rod assembly. Tighten attaching bolts. Connecting rod side clearance limit is .0137" (.35 mm). Install cylinder head, oil pick-up screen and oil pan. Reverse removal procedure.
