Intermediate Axle Shaft: Installation

Slide deflector ring onto intermediate axle shaft by hand. Excessive force should not be required. Ensure cupped end of deflector ring faces toward transaxle seal.
Using Special Tool (J44280-1), ensure deflector ring is located 2.93" (74.30 mm) from end of intermediate axle shaft. See Fig 1 .
Using Transaxle Seal Protector (SA91112T), insert intermediate axle shaft into transaxle. See Figure . After intermediate axle shaft splines pass through oil seal, remove seal protector and fully seat axle into transaxle.
On models equipped with SOHC engine, start all 3 intermediate axle shaft support bracket bolts.
On models equipped with DOHC engine, start lower 2 intermediate axle shaft support bracket bolts. Loosen bolt at intake manifold and align support bracket-to-intake manifold with mounting hole. Instal remaining bolts. On all models, tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Install right side axle shaft. See AXLE SHAFTS .
