Diagnostic Procedures
- Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Drive vehicle. Using scan tool, monitor vehicle speed. If vehicle speed is displayed, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If vehicle speed is not displayed, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect VSS signal conditioner module harness connector located above DLC. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage in signal conditioner module harness connector terminal No. 5 (Brown wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for open or ground in circuit to instrument panel fuse block.
- Measure voltage between VSS signal conditioner module harness connector terminals No. 1 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Brown wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery is not present, check for open in Black wire to ground.
- Connect a jumper wire to VSS signal conditioner module harness connector terminal No. 2 (White wire). Quickly touch jumper wire to ground, while observing vehicle speed on scan tool. If vehicle speed reading changes, go to step 8. If vehicle speed reading does not change, go to next step.
- Measure voltage on signal conditioner module harness connector terminal No. 2 (White wire). If voltage reading is 0-4 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is 4-6 volts, replace ECM. If voltage reading is greater than 6 volts, check circuit (White wire) for short to voltage. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, replace ECM.
- Check circuit (White wire) for open or short to ground. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, check for terminal tightness at connectors. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace ECM.
- Check resistance between VSS signal conditioner module harness connector terminals No. 3 (Tan wire) and No. 4 (Dark Green wire). If resistance is 1000-2000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 1000-2000 ohms, check for open in circuits. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, check for terminal tightness at connectors. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace right front wheel speed sensor.
- Set DVOM in AC scale. Measure voltage between VSS signal conditioner module harness connector terminals No. 3 (Tan wire) and No. 4 (Dark Green wire). Raise and support front of vehicle. Manually spin right front wheel. If AC voltage does not increase when wheel is spun, go to next step. If AC voltage increases when wheel is spun, check for terminal tightness at connectors. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace VSS signal conditioner module.
- Check gap between sensor and reluctor. Check for damage or missing reluctor or damaged right front wheel speed sensor. Replace as necessary.
