WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1998 Pontiac Grand Am, 1998 Oldsmobile Achieva, and 1998 Buick Skylark. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn headlights off. Cover photo resistor. If headlights turn on at normal level, go to step 4). If headlights do not turn on at normal level, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, monitor instrument cluster data list. If photo resistor data is greater than 29 counts, go to next step. If photocell data is less than 29 counts, replace photo resistor. Recheck system operation.
- Disconnect photo resistor connector. If photo resistor data is about zero counts, replace photo resistor. Recheck system operation. If photo resistor data is not about zero counts, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
- Ensure ignition switch is in RUN position and headlights are off. Shine a flashlight at photo resistor. If Daytime Running Lights (DRL) do not turn on, go to next step. If DRL turn on, system is operating normally. To locate a possible intermittent problem in DRL system, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, monitor instrument cluster data list. If photocell data is less than 37 counts, replace photo resistor. Recheck system operation. If photo resistor data is greater than 37 counts, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck system operation.
