July 1: So it begins. Don't worry, this is not in the correct legal jurisdiction!

Outboard Joint Boot Replacement

Required Special Tool: 

  1. Remove the boot band (large) and (small).
    NOTE: Boot band cannot be reused.
  2. Remove the boot.
  3. Wipe off the grease on the outboard joint.
  4. Apply a tape to the shaft spline area, and then incorporate the new boot band and new boot.

  5. Install the boot, aligning with the center groove on the boot small diameter.

  6. Roughly position the new boot band (small) at the center so that there are clearance at both ends (A and B).

  7. Crimp the new boot band (small) in several stages by using the special tool boot band crimping tool (MB991561) so that the crimping value (C) is within the standard value.

    Standard value (C): 1.2 - 4.5 mm (0.05 - 0.18 inch) 

    CAUTION: Do not turn the adjusting bolt of the special tool boot band crimping tool (MB991561) more than once. Otherwise, the special tool may be damaged.

  8. If the crimping value (C) is not within the standard value, tighten the adjusting bolt of the special tool boot band crimping tool (MB991561) to crimp it again.
    NOTE: The adjusting bolt changes (W) approximately 0.7 mm (0.03 inch) for each rotation.
  9. Check that the boot band is not sticking out past the place where it has been installed. If the boot band is sticking out, remove it and then repeat steps  6 to  8, using a new boot band.
    CAUTION: The special grease is used for the joint: Do not mix old and new grease, or grease in different types.

  10. Fill the boot with the specified amount of specified grease.

    Specified grease: Repair kit grease 

    Amount used:  Refer to SERVICE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  11. Align the center groove on the resin boot large diameter with the shaft groove.

  12. Roughly position the new boot band (large) at the center so that there are clearance at both ends (D and E).
  13. As shown in step  7, use the special tool boot band crimping tool (MB991561) to crimp the boot band (large).
  14. Check that the boot band is not sticking out past the place where it has been installed. If the boot band is sticking out, remove it and then repeat steps  12 and  13, using a new boot band.
