Front Axle Support: Installation

- Raise front axle support into place with workshop hoist. Replace sealing rings (D). See Figure. Install banjo bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install screws for front axle support to Engine support. Damaged threads in engine supports may be repaired with Helicoil thread inserts. Install thread inserts so that they are flush with original thread. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install steering gear. Replace self-locking nuts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install tension struts. Replace self-locking nuts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install control arms. Replace self-locking nuts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install steering tie rod on left and right. Ensure tapered spigot and bore are free of grease. Replace self-locking nut, brace on hexagon socket if necessary. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Ensure steering gear is set to straight ahead position. Markings on steering spindle and steering gear must be aligned. Install lower clamping screw on clamp. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install left and right top engine mounts.
- Remove engine support.
- Install engine splash guard and reinforcement plate. See Figure. Tighten bolts (2) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Bleed power steering. See appropriate POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING.
- Check and adjust front wheel alignment. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES under ADJUSTMENTS.
- Check distance between engine carrier and stem of double joint. If it is less than 5 mm, the steering gear must be straightened. Unfasten screws. See Figure.
- Press steering gear on left side to the rear and on right side forward against stop. This ensures the maximum distance between engine support and stem of double joint.
- Replace self-locking nuts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
