Side Air Bag Module: Installation

- Position the 2 side air bag module studs and locator pin through the backrest frame and install the 2 nuts.
- Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Position the deployment chute around the side air bag module.
- Insert the outboard side of the side air bag deployment chute between the backrest foam pad and the side air bag module, pulling it around the outboard side of the backrest frame.
- Insert the inboard side of the side air bag deployment chute between the backrest foam pad and the backrest frame, pulling it around the inboard side of the backrest frame.
- Engage the side air bag deployment chute retainers.
- The side air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the backrest frame.
- Align the side air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it is centered around the side air bag module.
- Route and engage the side air bag module wiring harness to the backrest frame.
- Engage the backrest cover J-clip around the side air bag module.
- Attach the backrest trim cover hook-and-loop strips near the bottom and at the sides.
- Install the rear carpet flap toe-kick in the following sequence.
- Engage the carpet flap toe-kick J-clip to the cushion frame.
- Engage the 2 J-clips to the backrest frame wires.
- Install the carpet flap toe-kick pin-type retainers to the cushion side shield and recliner cover.
- Install the backrest panel in the following sequence.
- Pivot the bottom of the backrest panel out as far as it will go and slide the backrest panel up, engaging the upper retainers on the other side of the backrest frame wires.
- Align the backrest panel middle clips to the backrest frame wires.
- Align the lower retainers in the backrest panel and push in, engaging the clips.
- Make sure the clips in the middle of the backrest panel are engaged to the backrest frame wires.
NOTE: The clips in the middle of the backrest panel can be damaged if the bottom of the backrest panel is not pivoted away from the seat. - Install the front seat. For additional information, refer to Front Seat in the removal and installation portion of SEAT SYSTEM - SEATS article.
NOTE:
The side air bag modules are keyed left and right and are not interchangeable. Do not install if the side air bag module locator pin does not align to the backrest frame hole.
WARNING:
Inspect the seat side air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad for any foreign material. If any foreign material is found, remove it. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
