Description & Operation
Speed control system is electronically and vacuum controlled. Major components of speed control system include actuator module, actuator, start inhibit relay, speed control switch, Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch, deactivator switch, air bag sliding contact, Transmission Range (TR) switch and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Speed control system is operational only at speeds greater than 30 MPH.
Speed control system is activated when ON switch and COAST/SET buttons are pressed. Vehicle will maintain set speed until new speed is set, brake pedal is depressed, CANCEL button is pressed, gear selector is placed in Neutral or OFF switch is pressed. If system has been deactivated by process other than pressing OFF switch, set speed can be regained by pressing and releasing RES/ACCEL button. Once cruise control is activated, CRUISE indicator will illuminate. On analog instrument cluster models, CRUISE and SET indicators are used. SET indicator is hard-wired to speed control actuator module, and illuminates when cruise control has been set to a desired speed. CRUISE indicator is hard-wired to speed control actuator module and illuminates when cruise control switch is placed in ON position. On electronic instrument cluster models, CRUISE indicator is hard-wired to instrument cluster, and controlled by speed control actuator module.
If a malfunction is detected in speed control system, system will automatically cancel. CRUISE indicator on instrument cluster will flash, warning driver of problem. Speed control deactivator switch provides an additional safety feature. When brake pedal is depressed, a signal is sent from deactivator switch to amplifier to deactivate operation.
