Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation

Manual Lever Position (MLP) Switch:

PURPOSE
The Manual Lever Position (MLP) Switch informs the Transmission Control Module (TCM)of the gear shift lever position. The MLP, also known as the Transmission Range (TR) Switch, prevents the engine from starting when the selector lever is in a position other than "PARK" or "NEUTRAL".

LOCATION
Mounted to the top front portion of the transaxle, below the battery.

OPERATION
The Manual Lever Position (MLP) switch detects the selector lever position and sends a signal to the TCM. The TCM then sends a signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reflecting the gear position.
