Catalyst Shield: Service and Repair

WARNING: The normal operating temperature of the exhaust system is very high. Never attempt to service any part of the system until it has cooled. Be especially careful when working around the catalytic converter. The temperature of the converter rises to a high level after only a few minutes of engine operation.

^ Exhaust shields, consisting of formed metal sheets, attach to the catalytic converter using five welded tabs. The catalytic converter heat shield may be serviced with a band clamp if they are loose. The shields must be replaced if damaged or show any sign of deterioration.
^ The catalyst welded shields may be replaced with clamp-on service shields.
