Cylinder Identification Sensor: Description and Operation

Cylinder Identification (CID) Sensor:

PURPOSE
The Cylinder Identification (CID) sensor detects cylinder #1 Top Dead Center (TDC) compression stroke. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) uses this signal to calculate injector timing.

OPERATION
A fixed magnetic sensor is attached to the distributor housing. A rotor is mounted onto the distributor shaft inside the distributor housing. As the rotor rotates, the magnetic sensor detects its position and sends a signal to the PCM.
