Lamp-To-Connector Interface Guidelines: Design

The lamp-to-connector must meet the following design guidelines:

  1. The design of this connector will be of two types: Type A-Connection molded integral to lamp; and, Type B-Connection part of the lamp pigtail.
  2. There will be two-vehicle lamp harness connector options - two or three terminal capabilities. The lamps (designed to meet SAE J2577) will be interchangeable with those connectors. The connectors will be keyed so they can only be assembled to the correct orientation.
  3. A positive mechanical locking system is required to ensure that the connection integrity remains unbroken in normal service (per SAE J2577).
  4. The connector locking system must provide tactile feedback when assembled.
  5. Lamp and Connector shall be dimensioned in accordance with the requirements in SAE J2577.
  6. Connector maximum wire size shall be: 14 AWG (2.0 sq. mm) with SXL or GPT insulation (per SAE J1128).
  7. Blade and box type terminals, 2.8 mm. wide.
  8. Max current 7.5 amps (5 nominal)
  9. Minimum current 25 milliamps
  10. The connector materials must be flame-resistant (complying with FMVSS 302).
