WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmitter range (min. 2 m).    
2 Remove lower engine compartment lining.   AR61.20-P-1105MFR
INSPECT Check     
3 Check poly-V-belt in visible area for signs of wear. Engine 139 in model 118, 177, 247  
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Engine 139 in model 118, 177 AP13.22-P-1352C
4 Check electric lines at starter battery (G1), starter battery ground point (W10) and electric line at starter for tight seating and fault-free condition.    
5 Check that electric lines at alternator (G2), at starter and alternator line connector (X5/4) and at left front wheel arch earth point (W3/2) are firmly seated and in fault-free condition.    
6 Check that ground strap between transmission mount and body is seated tightly and is in perfect condition.    
7 Connect load tester (079) according to connection scheme.    
8 Connect current clamp (065) to electric line (1).    
9 Start engine.    
10 Load on-board electrical system battery (G1) with the load tester (079) and check charging current at increased engine speed. IMPORTANT Change load resistance until max. charging current is achieved; in this connection, charging voltage may not fall below 12.7 V.

11 Check alternator diodes (G2).   AR15.40-P-9301-02MFG 
12 Switch off engine.    
INSTALLING Install     
13 Remove load tester (079) with current clamp (065) from vehicle.    
14 Install lower engine compartment lining.   AR61.20-P-1105MFR
