RP 1614 - Technician Mentor Program Guidelines: Introduction

In order to be competitive, vehicle maintenance operations must have competent technicians who are motivated to deliver the service customers demand and expect. Companies must be ready to train and develop technicians as part of their overall technician strategy, especially given the:

• current technician shortage,
• training effort needed to get an entry-level technician productive,
• complexity of today's equipment, and;
• natural attrition due to retirement.

Technician training can be very expensive and time consuming. Mentoring can help train new technicians to be productive without expending an exorbitant amount of time, money and resources.

TMC RP 1607, Technician Career Development,  should be used in conjunction with this RP when developing a technician mentor program. RP 1607 provides a model for designing, developing and implementing a technician career development program.
