RP 429 - Windshield Replacement And Repair: Introduction

Many factors have driven the trucking industry to improve truck/tractor designs, resulting in unprecedented developments in all components-except the glass in daylight openings. Currently, all vehicles use laminated glass as their windshield. The inner skin maintains the integrity of the glass when it shatters, so that the pieces do not form sharp chards. Some manufacturers are experimenting with solar management systems, but the glass laminate currently in use is mandated under FMVSS 205 and remains the most durable and cost effective option.

Although glass construction hasn't changed during the last several decades, cab engineering has prompted changes in shape and attachment method. To improve fuel economy, manufacturers have made truck exteriors increasingly aerodynamic. To eliminate drag from the typical rubber gasket/seal found on most units, an attachment method called glazing, direct glazing or bonding has been adopted from passenger car applications.

From a manufacturing point of view, one-piece windshields offer significant efficiencies. One-piece windshields offer improved visibility and greater cab strength. They also permit robotic installation-a significant manufacturing efficiency. Unfortunately, these manufacturing advantages do not make repair and replacement any easier for technicians.

Technicians need specialized training, new tools and products to repair one-piece windshields. Additionally, the large windshields are generally more expensive than two-piece designs. Because of labor and material costs, equipment managers should consider windshield repair instead of replacement.
