Ideal Fuel Guidelines
- Obtain the lowest API gravity fuel to give the highest BTU/gallon and the most fuel economy. This can be accomplished by minimizing the amount of No.1 diesel blended and also by finding the lowest gravity suppliers that can meet the other fuel specs mentioned below.
- Use less than 15 mg/1000 ml insolubles by the ASTM D2274 test so that the fuel filter life will be reasonably long (i.e. 15,000 to 30,000 miles).
- Use a fuel with a cloud point maximum which is guaranteed for the season. CFPP response data should be available and monitored for the fuels typically used to support the flow improver dose and chemistry. Try to stay with one fuel supplier for the season to avoid surprises when fuels from different terminals and refiners are used. Do business with major truckstop chains who offer/specify fuel quality for various regions of the country.
- Use a fuel that is treated with winter additives including wax modifiers and deicers which are added continuously from October 1 through March 15. Many truckstops only request additive when it is subzero. This can increase the chance for fuel filter plugging from icing and wax.
