Remove/Install Steering Gear - Ar46.20-D-0500TS

  Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
WARNING Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally screen off hazardous area if necessary. Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection). Wear protective gloves. AS00.00-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove front wheels.   AR40.10-D-1100TS
2 Unscrew nuts (2) on tie rod end (3) at left and right. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, ball head to steering knuckle *BA46.40-N-1003-06TS 
3 Remove tie rod end (3) at left and right from respective steering knuckle (4). SPECIAL TOOL Puller Fig 2
4 Remove left tie rod end (3). REMOVAL IMPORTANT : Mark installation position and release counternut (11) far enough to enable tie rod end (3) be removed.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Secure tie rod end (3) at marked position. Only tighten counternut (11) after checking and adjusting the toe.
 
5 Lower vehicle.    
6 Turn steering wheel to full right lock.    
7 Fix steering wheel in place. SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning nut Fig 1

8 Raise vehicle.    
9 Remove lower engine compartment paneling. If installed.

10 Remove universal joint (5) from steering gear (1). INSTALLATION NOTES
Fasten universal joint (5) correctly on steering gear (1). The groove on the shaft of the steering gear (1) must line up with bore in universal joint (5).
Otherwise, the bolt (6) cannot be screwed in correctly.
INSTALLATION NOTES
Always observe the shown direction of installation of the bolt (6).
Malfunction or damage can occur otherwise.
IMPORTANT To do so, remove bolt (6) and universal joint (5) with the steering shaft and place outside working area. Remove universal joint (5) from the steering shaft.

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, lower steering shaft to steering gear
If universal joint (5) was disconnected from steering shaft, ↓
Reattach universal joint (5) to steering shaft.
IMPORTANT When doing so, guide the guide groove of universal joint (5) precisely into the steering shaft.

11 Remove spring tension mounting consoles (8) at left and right. NOTES Unscrew screws (7) of spring tension mounting consoles (8) evenly and gradually by approx. 10 mm because the spring tension mounting consoles (6) are under tension. Otherwise the threads can get damaged.
IMPORTANT To do this, remove bolts (7).
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, lower spring clamp plate to front axle carrier *BA32.20-N-1001-01A 
12 Disconnect electrical connections (9).    
13 Remove steering gear (1). NOTES
Carefully remove steering gear (1). Damage to the housing of the steering gear (1) can lead to malfunctions.
 
    IMPORTANT For this purpose, remove screws (10).  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw, steering gear to front axle carrier/integral carrier *BA46.20-N-1001-01TS 
14 Install in the reverse order.    
15 Teach-in steering gear (1) using vehicle diagnosis system. If the steering gear (1) was replaced.  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect/disconnect diagnostic unit   AD00.00-D-2000-06TS
16 Perform chassis alignment.   AR40.20-D-0200TS
