Overview 

This document contains information on:

General 

The park pawl, in addition to the parking brake, mechanically secures the vehicle against rolling away.

Function 

The park pawl prevents shifting out of transmission position "P" using the DIRECT SELECT lever when the brake pedal is not actuated. The park pawl is engaged and disengaged electrohydraulically or electromechanically. The vehicle is secured mechanically by blocking the parking lock gear in the transmission.

The park pawl is engaged and disengaged by operating the selector lever or depending on various vehicle conditions, e.g. by opening the driver's door when the engine is running or by removing the ignition key.
