S16/13 DIRECT SELECT selector lever S110/1 Steering wheel downshift button S111/1 Steering wheel upshift button
Gear indicator in instrument cluster
The gear display shows the driver the gear that is automatically engaged at the moment "D1" up to "D9" or the other selector lever positions "R", "N", "P".
The following selector lever positions are recorded via the DIRECT SELECT lever (S16/13):
- "R", reverse gear
- "N", neutral and start position (no power transmission, vehicle can move freely)
- "D1" to "D9", all 9 forward gears are available.
In order to change from one selector lever position to the next, greater pressure must be applied to the DIRECT SELECT selector lever (higher force application necessary).
By actuating the park pawl on the DIRECT SELECT selector lever, the park pawl is activated at a vehicle speed < 8 km/h. Upshifting and downshifting
The upshift and downshift are performed via the steering wheel upshift button (S111/1) and the steering wheel downshift button (S110/1). Pressing the steering wheel gearshift buttons once causes the gear to shift up or down by one gear.
If the steering wheel downshift button is pressed and held, a shift is made to a shift range, from which the vehicle can be favorably accelerated or braked.
If the shift range is restricted, upshifts occur close to the engine cutoff speed.
Gear selection when starting off
Start-off occurs in 1st gear.
Short-term M program
The short-term M mode is a temporary mode that is activated when the steering wheel gearshift buttons are operated. Pressing in the positive (+) direction triggers an upshift and pressing in the negative (-) direction triggers a downshift, insofar as this is permissible. If not, the current gear is maintained.
After a specified time window, this function deactivates again automatically. The activated time can be extended when the minimum speed is undershot (e.g. when stopping), when lateral acceleration is recognized or if the vehicle is in overrun mode.
If none of the stated criteria are active anymore, the short-term M mode remains active for a specified period of time. After this remaining time has elapsed, a switch is made back to the initial shift program. In addition, the driver is shown a recommended shift operation in the instrument cluster. This is part of the gearshift recommendation that is also integrated.
The driver can prematurely cancel the short-term M program through specific actions, e.g. by pressing and holding the steering wheel upshift button (S111/1) in the "positive" direction (+), by changing the gear range or by changing the transmission mode. If one of these preconditions is met, a switch is made back to the initial shift program.
