Notes On Removal/Installation Of Windows Topical Note - Ah67.10-P-1000-02RT
Model 907
Work on glass panes
- Approved materials and tools must be used at all times because the material characteristics of the recommended products exert an influence on the work results and working hours involved.
- When working on glued-in vehicle windows always wear strong gloves and safety glasses as there is a risk of any injuries through cuts or splinters.
- Adhesive bonds are a part of the unibody construction. Therefore, always conduct work on glued-in windows with great care.
- Following fire damage, check the bondings and replace them if necessary, as the adhesive is damaged by strong heat.
Repair of glass panes
The repair of windshields is permissible under the following conditions:
- Repair damage to outside surface of window only.
- Damage to the inside of the windshield or to the plastic laminate is not permitted.
- Ensure that moisture has not penetrated into the damaged point (seal damaged point immediately after damage with transparent adhesive fabric tape and repair it as soon as possible).
- The diameter of the crater at the point of impact should not exceed 5 mm.
- Any radial cracks extending from the point of impact should not exceed 50 mm. They must not end at the adhesive bead and never reach to the outer edge of the window.
- Use repair method only if the damaged area is outside the driver's field of vision.
- The repair resin must be resistant to ultraviolet radiation.
- Repair point must be clean, free of grease and dry.
Replacement of glass panes
- Use fabric adhesive tape in the repair area in order to protect the paint. If when replacing glass panes, the paint has been damaged, clean the damaged areas and treat them with anticorrosion agents. Then paint the repair point (see Paint repair guidelines). Never touch the bonding surfaces after cleaning and priming.
- Before applying adhesive to painted sheet metal, clean the gluing point and treat it with a primer (bonding agent). Do not completely remove any remaining adhesive residue, instead leave a height of approx. 1 to 2 mm standing. Cut adhesive residue to the required remaining height only just before installation.
- Maintain the curing time for the adhesive at all times, by doing so the full resilience of the adhesive bead is reached. Open the windows before closing the doors, so that air pressure does not push the glass up off of the adhesive bead.
- Following replacement of bonded windows, windshields, panoramic roofs and panoramic sliding roofs, the vehicle should not be moved until the curing time for the adhesive has expired (observe the specifications from the adhesive manufacturer).
