Model 190
Shown up to 30.11.2018
Shown as of 01.12.2018
Function requirements, general
- Engine running or drivetrain operational
- Gear range "D" engaged
- Vehicle speed:
- Vehicle speed from 30 to 250 km/h (except code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) or for deactivated distance control (with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
- Vehicle speed from 30 to 200 km/h (with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) and activated distance control)
Cruise control - general
The cruise control constantly adjusts the actual speed of the vehicle without operation of the accelerator pedal to the target speed set by the driver. The vehicle is also automatically braked through active intervention by the brake system when driving down a hill to maintain the target speed. To do this, the cruise control evaluates the driver's commands and the current driving condition.
Evaluation of these variables takes place dependent both model and installed equipment by the following control unit:
- Electronic Stability Program control unit
- DISTRONIC controller unit (with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
For vehicles with code 239 *DISTRONIC PLUS) the DISTRONIC controller unit transmits function relevant requests via the chassis CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit receives and processes these and prioritizes them according to the respective own evaluated parameters.
Operation cruise control, up to 30.11.2018
Operation cruise control, as of 01.12.2018
The cruise control is activated via the resume from memory switch (up to 30.11.2018) or the cruise control resume switch (top switch position) (as of 01.12.2018). Here the last stored or momentary vehicle speed is set as the set speed.
The specified speed can be changed in steps of 1 km/h or 10 km/h via the decelerate and set switch and the accelerate and set switch (up to 30.11.2018) or the cruise control switch (as of 01.12.2018).
Actuation up to the pressure point changes the specified speed by 1 km/h. If the switch is actuated beyond the pressure point, the specified speed changes by 10 km/h each time. If the switch is held at or beyond the pressure point, the specified speed is changed every 0.6 s.
The following input factors are evaluated to implement the function :
- Engine running or drivetrain operational (function requirements)
- Engaged gear range (function requirements)
- Vehicle speed
- Driver request via cruise control lever (up to 30.11.2018)
- Driver request via cruise control switch and cruise control resume switch (as of 01 12 2018)
- Accelerator pedal position
For vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits the wheel speed signals via chassis CAN 1 to the DISTRONIC controller unit.
Driver request via cruise control lever (up to 30.11.2018) :
The driver request over the CC lever are directly read in by the steering column tube module control unit. The steering column tube module control unit transmits the control signals of the CC lever via chassis CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit and, for vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS), also to the DISTRONIC controller unit.
Engine running or drivetrain operational :
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit transmits the signal "engine running" or "drivetrain operational" via the drive train CAN, powertrain control unit and chassis CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit and, for vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS), also to the DISTRONIC controller unit.
Among other things, the ME-SFI control unit coordinates all acceleration, deceleration, and switching requests. in doing so it prioritizes requests according to their relevance, while taking account of the additional variables such as the operating condition of the ancillaries or requests from the comfort systems such as the AAC.
Engaged gear range :
The DKG control unit sends information about the engaged gear range via the drive train CAN, powertrain control unit and chassis CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit and for vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) also to the adaptive cruise control controller unit.
Vehicle speed :
The vehicle speed is calculated by the Electronic Stability Program control unit from the wheel speeds.
Driver request via cruise control switch and cruise control resume switch (as of 01.12.2018) :
The steering wheel electronics read in the operation signals of the cruise control switch and the cruise control resume switch directly and send them via the steering wheel CAN, steering column tube module control unit, AMG FlexRay, AMG gateway control unit, and suspension CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit and, for vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS), to the DISTRONIC controller unit in addition.
Accelerator pedal position :
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit sends information about the accelerator pedal position via the drive train CAN, powertrain control unit and chassis CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit and for vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) also to the adaptive cruise control controller unit.
The following initial parameters (requests) are issued to implement the function :
- Increase/reduce the drive torque
- Engage targeted gear (back or upshift)
- Increase/reduce the braking torque
Increase/reduce the drive torque :
For vehicles without code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the Electronic Stability Program control unit evaluates the input factors as well as further driving dynamic requests and transmits the request "increase/reduce drive torque" via chassis CAN 1, powertrain control unit and engine CAN to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. The ME-SFI [ME] control unit implements this request appropriately.
For vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the DISTRONIC controller unit transmits the request "increase/reduce drive torque" via chassis CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit processes this and transmits it according to its priority via chassis CAN 1, powertrain control unit and engine CAN to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. The ME-SFI [ME] control unit implements this request appropriately.
Engage targeted gear (downshift or upshift) :
For vehicles without code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the Electronic Stability Program control unit evaluates the input factors along with additional driving dynamic requests and sends the "Engage target gear" request via chassis CAN 1, powertrain control unit and the drive train CAN to the DKG control unit.
For vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the DISTRONIC controller unit transmits the request "engage targeted gear" via chassis CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit processes this and transmits it according to its priority via chassis CAN 1, powertrain control unit and drive train CAN to the DKG control unit.
This request is to be understood as a shift recommendation.
Downshift or upshift of the A/T takes place autonomously by the DKG control unit itself, dependent on the current operating condition.
Raise/reduce braking torque :
For vehicles without code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the Electronic Stability Program control unit evaluates the input factors and actuates the traction system hydraulic unit appropriately.
For vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the DISTRONIC controller unit transmits the request "increase/reduce braking torque" via chassis CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit evaluates these and actuates the traction system hydraulic unit appropriately.
The traction system hydraulic unit reacts by increasing or reducing the braking torque.
Cruise control encompasses the following subfunctions:
- Automatic speed control
- Limiter
- Additional automatic speed control function requirements
- Cruise control is selected via the SPEEDTRONIC switch (except code 460 (Canada version) and except code 494 (USA version)) (SPEEDTRONIC light-emitting diode does not light up) (up to 30.11.2018)
- Cruise control selected via cruise control and limiter switch (except code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS)), or via limiter and Proximity Control Assist button (with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) (as of 01.12.2018)

Automatic speed control
By actuating the resume from memory switch (up to 30.11.2018), the cruise control and limiter switch, (as of 01.12.2018 except code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) or the Limiter and Proximity Control Assist button (as of 01.12.2018 with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS)), the last saved specified speed is set as long as a specified speed was saved since the last engine start. If no set speed was stored, the current vehicle speed is set as the set speed. The target speed is displayed in the IC.
Up to 30.11.2018
For vehicles without code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the Electronic Stability Program control unit sends the set speed (target speed) via chassis CAN 1, front SAM control unit, chassis CAN 2, AMG Gateway control unit and the user interface CAN to the IC.
For vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the DISTRONIC controller unit sends the set speed (target speed) via chassis CAN 1, front SAM control unit, chassis CAN 2, AMG Gateway control unit and the user interface CAN to the IC.
As of 01.12.2018
For vehicles except code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS), the Electronic Stability Program control unit sends the speed setting (specified speed) via suspension CAN 1, the AMG gateway control unit, and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
For vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS), the DISTRONIC controller unit sends the speed setting (specified speed) via suspension CAN 1, the AMG gateway control unit, and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
The driver also has the option to accelerate beyond the set target speed through actuation of the accelerator pedal (for example when overtaking). The set speed is regulated again after removal of the acceleration request (releasing the accelerator pedal).
The following events deactivate the automatic speed control:
- Actuation of the off switch (up to 30.11.2018)
- Actuation of the cruise control resume switch (as of 01.12.2018)
- Switchover to the variable speed limiter
- Depressing the brake pedal
- Active regulation of the ESP®
- Speed below 30 km/h
- Gear range not "D"
The following activities are started in order to reach or maintain the set speed:
- Increase/reduce the drive torque
- Engage targeted gear (back or upshift)
- Increase/reduce the braking torque
Limiter
The DTCO has the following subfunctions:
- Variable limiter (except code 460 (Canada version) and except code 494 (USA version))
- Permanent limiter
Additional function requirements for variable limiter (except code 460 (Canada version) and except code 494 (USA version))
- Variable limiter selected via SPEEDTRONIC switch (SPEEDTRONIC light-emitting diode lights up) (up to 30.11.2018)
The steering column tube module control unit actuates the SPEEDTRONIC LED directly.
- Variable limiter selected via cruise control and limiter switch (except code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) or limiter and Proximity Control Assist button (with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) (as of 01.12.2018)
The status of the limiter is shown in the instrument cluster. The steering wheel electronics read in the operation signals of the cruise control and limiter switch or the limiter and Proximity Control Assist button directly and sends them via the steering wheel CAN, steering column tube module control unit, AMG FlexRay, AMG gateway control unit, and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
Variable limiter (except code 460 (Canada version) and except code 494 (USA version))
The variable limiter can be used to limit the maximum speed of the vehicle to a freely selectable value (e.g. 50 km/h in urban traffic). The driver can accelerate the vehicle up to the set limit.
If the set limit was reached, the following activities are started:
- Reduce drive torque
- Engage targeted gear (shift down)
- Raise braking torque
Model 190 up to 11/30/18
If switching takes place on the variable SPEEDTRONIC on the CC lever, the automatic speed control is deactivated.
Model 190 as of 12/1/18
If the driver switches to the variable limiter on the steering wheel, the automatic speed control is deactivated.
The following events deactivate the variable speed limiter:
- Actuation of the off switch (up to 30.11.2018)
- Actuation of the cruise control resume switch (downward) (as of 01.12.2018)
- Changeover to CC
- Kickdown (accelerator pedal pressed by more than 90 % and driven speed less than 20 km/h removed from the set maximum speed)
- ESP switched to passive mode
Permanent limiter
The maximum speed of the vehicle can be limited in steps of 10 km/h from 160 to 240 km/h. Adjustment of the maximum speed takes place in the menu "Settings", "Vehicle", and "Limitation (winter tire)" in the instrument cluster (up to 30.11.2018) or in the head unit (as of 01.12.2018).
Up to 30.11.2018
For vehicles without code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the IC sends the set maximum speed via user interface CAN, AMG Gateway control unit, chassis CAN 2, front SAM control unit and chassis CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit.
For vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) the IC sends the set maximum speed via user interface CAN, AMG Gateway control unit, chassis CAN 2, front SAM control unit and chassis CAN 1 to the DISTRONIC controller unit.
As of 01.12.2018
For vehicles except code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS), the head unit sends the set maximum speed via the user interface CAN, AMG gateway control unit, and suspension CAN 1 to the Electronic Stability Program control unit.
For vehicles with code 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS), the head unit sends the set maximum speed via the user interface CAN, AMG gateway control unit, and suspension CAN 1 to the DISTRONIC controller unit.
At a speed of approx. 10 km/h before reaching the set maximum speed, a message appears in the instrument cluster that indicates the maximum speed limitation. The driver can accelerate the vehicle up to the set maximum speed.
If the set maximum speed is reached, the following activities are started:
- Reduce drive torque
- Engage targeted gear (shift down)
- Raise braking torque
The permanent limiter also remains active for a switched off variable speed limiter.
