Function requirements for Media Interface, general
- Circuit 30g ON
Media interface, general
The following portable devices can be connected to this universal consumer electronic interface cable using an adapter cable:
- AUX unit (class 1) (e.g. MP3-player)
- iPod or serial universal serial bus (USB) devices (Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)) (class 2)
- Model 204.9, model 204.0/2 up to 28.2.2011: USB mass storage device (class 3) (e.g. USB sticks, USB hard drives)
On model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.2011 and model 204.3, the USB mass storage devices are connected via the electrical USB connector (X115)
The electrical AUX connector (X39/45) has been eliminated.
The adapter cable, media interface electrical connector (X18/70), media interface control unit (N125/1) and Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) are used to connected the portable terminal to the audio equipment depending on the vehicle equipment.
The following data formats are supported:
- MP3
- Windows Media Audio (WMA)
As of 1.6.2009 (without code (523) MB Audio 20 radio and code (494) USA version): With audio source "Aux" (via Media Interface adapter cable), "Standard" and "Boost" can be selected under menu "Volume". The input level can be increased by selecting "Boost".
If the audio equipment does not support the connected portable terminal, the portable terminal is deeply discharged or the media interface electrical connector is defective, a corresponding message is output via the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).
On vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer, video data can also be processed or displayed.
The portable devices listed are controlled using one of the following controls:
- Buttons on audio unit
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Voice control system
Menu guidance is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display and is dependent on the portable terminal connected.
Function sequence for media interface
The Media Interface control unit is supplied with voltage via two direct lines (terminal 31 and terminal 30g).
If a portable device is connected, it is recognized by the media interface control unit via the following route:
- Adapter cable
- Media interface electrical connector
The Media interface control unit then sends a signal to the audio equipment, which changes to the connected source in the case of iPods or MTP devices (however, not for AUX devices). The user can now display the audio data or video data on the Audio/COMAND display by selecting the "Media Interface" menu item as well as the specific submenu item ("Normal Track Sequence", "Track List Mix", "Medium Mix").
Selection of the "Media interface" menu item and the specific submenus is possible using one of the following controls:
- Buttons on audio unit
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
The control signals from the buttons on the "Audio equipment" are processed internally. The settings are transmitted over the audio/COMAND control panel to the audio equipment via the telematics CAN (CAN A).
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "audio unit" via the following route:
- Steering wheel electronics (N135)
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- Interior CAN
After the audio equipment has processed the control signals, it sends the corresponding requests to the portable terminal on the adapter cable via the following path:
- MOST
- Media interface control unit
- Media interface electrical connector
The portable terminal on the adapter cable evaluates the requests and sends the corresponding audio signals and data to the audio equipment via the following path:
- Media interface electrical connector
- Media interface control unit
- MOST
Video signals and data (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer) are transmitted by the media interface electrical connector over a Y-brightness (luminance)/C-color information (chrominance) (Y/C) line directly to the COMAND control unit.
The video signals and data are edited internally by the COMAND control unit and transmitted to the Audio/COMAND display via a low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line.
On vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment relays the audio signals directly to the speaker system via direct lines.
on vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment transmits audio signals via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3). The sound system amplifier control unit processes the signals and relays them for output via direct lines to the following speakers.
More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" document.
