The gasoline injection and ignition system with direct injection forms the engine timing "MED 17.7.3" in an electrical combination with the sensors and actuators of engine 276 DI (D irect-I njection).

The ME-SFI [ME] control unit contains the whole engine timing.
Sensor data is directly read in from the engine timing and indirectly via the CAN network and actuates the control actuators as required. Here the individual functions and systems of the engine timing system unit are controlled and coordinated by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

Diagnosis
For diagnostic purposes the DTC for the engine timing are read out and cleared by the XENTRY Diagnostics and targeted individual diagnostic functions are actuated.
CAN network
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit exchanges data via the attached drive train CAN and chassis CAN (up to model year 2014) or chassis CAN 1 (as of model year 2014) with other control units which are integrated into the CAN network.
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit also acts as the interface (gateway) between the two CAN bus systems. The ME-SFI [ME] control unit is also attached to the drive train sensor CAN (for code 920 (Gasoline direct injection with stratified charge)) and exchanges data over it.
Flash programming
The engine timing in ME-SFI [ME] control unit is flashable, that is the complete software of the control unit can be exchanged with XENTRY Diagnostics (installed new). The software required for control unit programming can be found on the Star Diagnosis software DVD.

Homogeneous mode (engine 276 DI with homogeneous mode (DEH))
In homogeneous mode an homogeneous combustible fuel/air mixture (λ=1) is generated within the whole combustion chamber. There are no further measures required for exhaust aftertreatment since the normal three-way catalytic converter adequately converts the pollutants.
Stratified operation (engine 276 DI with stratified charge (DES)) (for code 920 (Gasoline direct injection with stratified charge))
During stratified operation, a combustible mixture (λ ≈1) is present only in the vicinity of the spark plug (R4) while various lambda values are present in the remaining combustion chamber. This varies from pure intake air through to exhaust gases from the EGR. This causes the fuel consumption in stratified operation to be less than in homogeneous mode. Due to the excess air which consists of up to 75% by volume of nitrogen the NOx development in stratified operation is significantly higher than in homogeneous mode. This requires use of a NOx storage catalytic converter.
Homogeneous stratified operation (HOS) (engine 276 DI with stratified charge (DES)) (for code 920 (Gasoline direct injection with stratified charge))
The new operating mode HOS shows that it can deliver more favorable values in the range above 4 bar than pure stratified operation. It also allows replacement of homogeneous mode up to above 7 bar, whereby significant savings in fuel consumption are achieved.
HOS is a combination of the homogeneous lean and classic stratified combustion process. For a unthrottled engine the first injection is sprayed in suction stroke while the actual "stratified" injection takes place before the ignition.
