The Cruise control maintains a preset speed set by the driver by using the Cruise control switch while driving. Maintenance of the speed also takes place when driving up a hill or coasting down a hill.
In the case of very steep upwards and downward inclines it is possible that the Cruise control cannot maintain the speed. If the upwards and downward inclines become less steep and the speed does not go below 30 km/h then stored speed will be achieved again.
To do this the following information is read in via the Controller Area Network bus Class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) by the ESP control unit:
- Instrument cluster
- SCM [MRM] control unit (N80)
- CDI control unit, for vehicles with engine 642
- CDI control unit (N3/21), for vehicles with engine 646
- ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/23), for vehicles with engine 272
- EIS [EZS] control unit (N73N73)
The following sensor signals are also read in discretely by the ESP control unit:
- Position of the accelerator pedal by the accelerator pedal module (B37/3)
- Stop light switch (S9/1)
- Position of the clutch pedal by the clutch pedal switch (S40/6) (for vehicles with transmission 711.6)
- Ground speed by the RPM sensor
Store current speed (limiter indicator lamp OFF)
Upon pressing the Cruise control switch in the position "store current or higher speed" or in position "store current or lower speed" for a held-down accelerator pedal, the Cruise control is switched on and the current speed stored. Acceleration, for example to overtake another vehicle, does not switch off the Cruise control. After acceleration the Cruise control establishes the stored speed again.
Switch off Cruise control (limiter indicator lamp OFF)
Upon pressing the Cruise control switch in position "Switch off Cruise control" the Cruise control is switched off. The Cruise control switches itself off automatically by further processes:
- The brake is actuated.
- The speed is less than 30 km/h.
- The ESP control unit regulates during driving or a fault is present in the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system.
- The Antilock brake system (ABS) and Anti-slip regulation (ASR) regulate.
- The clutch is actuated for more than 6 seconds (for vehicles with manual transmission).
- The automatic transmission is set when driving to neutral.
The function limiter can also be switched on via the Cruise control switch. The Tempomat function is not selected for an engaged function limiter.
Switch on the limiter
Upon pressing the cruise control switch in the position "Change between Cruise control and limiter" the limiter switches on. The limiter indicator lamp is activated.
Switch off the limiter
Upon pressing the Cruise control switch in position "Switch off Cruise control" the limiter is switched off. The limiter also switches off automatically for the following processes:
- Kickdown actuation is recognized by the accelerator pedal module.
- ESP and ABS are faulty or not functioning.
The speed can be limited permanently through the following options (for example for operating with winter tires) at a value above 30 km/h:
- For vehicles with code (CL4) Multifunction steering wheel with trip computer via the steering wheel shift buttons
- For vehicles except code (CL4) Multifunction steering wheel with trip computer without steering wheel shift buttons over STAR DIAGNOSIS
The speed set by the limiter cannot be exceeded.
