Function requirements for proximity warning system (AWS), general

Proximity warning system, general

The distance warning system is an additional function in DISTRONIC PLUS that is controlled by the radar sensors (SGR) control unit (N62/1). It warns the driver in the speed range of 30 to 250 km/h of moving or stationary obstacles in his lane

Proximity warning system, function sequence

Independently of the DISTRONIC PLUS distance control, the driver can activate or deactivate the distance warning system separately via the left and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S110, S111) in the "Support Systems" menu in the instrument cluster (A1). Thus the distance warning system is dependent here on the function (function requirements) of the radar sensor system.

When distance warning is activated, the distance warning readiness indicator is illuminated at the bottom left next to the electronic speedometer (A1p8).

The multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster shows the host vehicle, the set target distance and the preceding vehicle with its current distance (distance display).

The distance warning is triggered whenever a deceleration > 6 m/s2 is necessary in order to avoid a collision. Distance warnings are indicated by the DTR warning lamp and an intermittent signal.

IMPORTANT The distance warning system does not perform any control functions by itself, such as braking the vehicle.

With the DTR distance potentiometer (S40r1, S40/4r1), the specified distance from the vehicle in front can be set in six steps between approx. 1.0 and 2.0 s, depending on vehicle speed.

In the third stage at a speed of

100 km/h, this corresponds to a target distance of around 42 m. The target distance is converted from seconds to meters depending on the speed of the host vehicle and is displayed in the form of a white line on the range indicator in the instrument cluster.

The target distance in the distance chart adapts to the current vehicle speed without the driver having to adjust the DTR distance potentiometer.

except code (494) USA version

As an additional function, the driver is alerted if he/she remains within a distance <0.9s from the preceding vehicle for longer than 3s. Here the DTR warning lamp is illuminated until the correct distance is reobtained

This should help the driver to avoid a fine (for leaving insufficient distance to the vehicle in front).
