Function requirements, general

IMPORTANT The mobile phone used must support the Hands Free Profile 1.0 or 1.5. The mobile phones that meet these requirements are listed at http://www.mercedes-benz-mobile.com.

IMPORTANT Information and messages are displayed, depending on the equipment installed, by means of the COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or the SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) (with code (867) SPLITVIEW), referred to below as the COMAND display.

IMPORTANT In vehicles with code (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest, it is possible to operate a mobile phone that is authorized at the COMAND controller unit.

Communication takes place over a Bluetooth connection from the rear handset (A34/16) to the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91) and then to the COMAND controller unit.

Without code (386) Comfort telephony:

Communication takes place from the COMAND controller unit to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the mobile phone.

With code (386) Comfort telephony:

Communication takes place from the COMAND controller unit to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the Bluetooth module (A34/7).

From the Bluetooth module, communication takes place via the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder (A34/15) to the mobile phone.

Telephone switch-on/switch-off characteristics, general

Up to 31.5.09:

The mobile telephone system is activated automatically by a wake-up pulse via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) if there is a mobile phone in the UPCI [UHI] cell phone holder (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) with an enabled SIM card.

As of 1.6.09

In vehicles without code (386) Comfort telephony, the mobile phone must be switched on and off manually using the buttons on the mobile phone.

In vehicles with code (386) Comfort telephony, the mobile phone is switched on automatically by a wake-up pulse when the COMAND controller unit is switched on. The COMAND controller unit transmits the wake-up pulse over a direct line to the Bluetooth module and then to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder. The mobile phone is then supplied with power and switched on.

In vehicles with code (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest, the inserted rear handset is switched on by means of the rear handset holder (A34/13). The wake-up pulse is provided by the COMAND controller unit.

If it is enabled on the mobile phone, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) prompt appears (not with "CDMA network" in the USA). The PIN prompt is displayed on the COMAND display and on the instrument cluster (A1).

The signals that are required for this are transmitted by the COMAND controller unit via the low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line to the COMAND display and via the central CAN (CAN F) to the instrument cluster.

IMPORTANT In vehicles without code (386) comfort telephony the PIN can only be entered on the mobile phone itself. Appropriate instructions can be found in the equipment manufacturer's operating instructions.

The following possibilities are available for PIN entry:

The control signals of the center console button group are routed to the COMAND controller unit via the following route:

The control signals from the front central operating unit are transmitted to the COMAND controller unit via the telematics CAN. The COMAND controller unit then forwards them over the following route:

Up to 31.5.09:

The VCS [SBS] control signals are picked up by the hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) and forwarded via a direct line to the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit (N41/3) (with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS])).

The UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit (N123/1) then transmits the PIN entry to the mobile radio exchange via the following route:

As of 1.6.09

The VCS [SBS] speech signals are picked up by the hands-free system microphone group and relayed to the COMAND controller unit via a direct line.

The COMAND controller unit then forwards them to the mobile phone via the following route:

In vehicles with code (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest:

Up to 31.5.09:

After registering in the mobile telephone network, the name of the mobile telephone network is displayed on the mobile phone screen and the COMAND display in vehicles without code (494) USA version.

In vehicles with code (494) USA version the information is only displayed on the mobile phone screen.

The mobile phone signals or data are received by the mobile phone via the following route:

Up to 31.5.09:

The display on the mobile phone's screen is forwarded internally.

The display on the COMAND display is transmitted via the following route:

As of 1.6.09
